Astronomers of the Future Club - June 2019 Meeting Report

by Duncan Lunan

At the meeting of the Astronomers of the Future Club in Troon on Thursday June 27th, the speaker was Chris O’Kane of the Astronomical Society of Glasgow, with “Memories of Apollo”. Chris attributed his interest in the subject to his grandfather’s love of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells. Nevertheless, for Chris and his 9-year-old contemporaries, with Thunderbirds still on TV and Star Trek just started, landing on the Moon was expected and almost taken for granted – it’s true significance didn’t become apparent till later.

Continuing the celebration of Apollo 11’s 50th anniversary, the next meeting of the Astronomers of the Future Club, on Thursday July 25th, will be the launch of Past Chair Duncan Lunan’s next book, “From the Moon to the Stars”, a collection of his space travel stories old and new. Details of the book are on Duncan’s website, www.duncanlunan.com. As usual the meeting will be from 19:15 to 21:00 hrs at the RSAS Barassie Works Club, 4 Shore Road, Troon, KA10 6AG. For more information, contact Alan Martin on 07947 331632.
